How it works and when to use it

Pack-years = (cigarettes a day ÷ 20) × years smoked, so a pack a day for 20 years is 20 pack-years.

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF 2021) advises yearly low-dose CT screening for lung cancer from 50 to 80 years with 20 pack-years or more, smoking now or quit within the past 15 years.

Reference: Pack-years = (cigarettes a day ÷ 20) × years; lung cancer screening: USPSTF 2021 (age 50-80, 20+ pack-years, smoking now or quit within 15 years)
