For doctors and health professionals

A tool to support the clinical decisions of doctors and health professionals, not for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.

This calculator is inside the patient's file in Clinicato: open it from "Medical tools" while you chart the visit, it fills in from the patient's details and vital signs where they are recorded, and adds its result to the visit's plan in one tap, with the "Medical tools" add-on. Calculator

Medical note: The result supports a clinical decision, it does not replace the doctor's judgement or examining the patient, and is to be checked against your reference before any treatment decision.

How it works and when to use it

One point each for: confusion, urea over 7 mmol/L, respiratory rate 30 or more, systolic under 90 or diastolic 60 or less, and age 65 or more, and the calculator takes urea or BUN in their units.

By the British Thoracic Society (BTS): 0 to 1 low risk, often home treatment, 2 consider hospital treatment, 3 to 5 severe pneumonia needing hospital and ICU assessment at 4 or 5, and without urea CRB-65 is used.

Frequently asked questions

When do I use CRB-65?

In the clinic when no urea result is at hand, it is the score the BTS suggests for primary care.

Does it replace clinical judgement?

No, low oxygen, chronic disease and social circumstances can call for admission despite a low score.
