Clinicato

eGFR calculator: CKD-EPI 2021 (race-free)

Work out the estimated glomerular filtration rate from creatinine, age and sex with the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation, with the KDIGO stage.

For doctors and health professionals

A tool to support the clinical decisions of doctors and health professionals, not for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.

This calculator is inside the patient's file in Clinicato: open it from "Medical tools" while you chart the visit, it fills in from the patient's details and vital signs where they are recorded, and adds its result to the visit's plan in one tap, with the "Medical tools" add-on. Medical note: The result supports a clinical decision, it does not replace the doctor's judgement or examining the patient, and is to be checked against your reference before any treatment decision.

How it works and when to use it

The calculator uses the 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation, the one recommended today without a race term, and takes creatinine in mg/dL or µmol/L.

KDIGO stages: G1 normal or high (90 or more), G2 mildly decreased (60 to 89), G3a (45 to 59), G3b (30 to 44), G4 (15 to 29), G5 kidney failure (under 15), and chronic kidney disease needs the fall to last 3 months or other markers of damage.

Frequently asked questions

Does one low eGFR mean chronic kidney disease?

No, chronic kidney disease needs the fall to last more than 3 months, or markers of damage such as albumin in the urine.

When is the result not accurate?

With very high or very low muscle mass, amputation, pregnancy and acute kidney injury, where cystatin C can help.

Why was the race term removed?

The 2021 version was refitted without race, to avoid the estimation errors linked to it.
