Clinicato

Mean arterial pressure (MAP) calculator

Work out the mean arterial pressure from the systolic and diastolic pressure, with the 65 mmHg threshold used in septic shock guidelines.

For doctors and health professionals

A tool to support the clinical decisions of doctors and health professionals, not for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.

This calculator is inside the patient's file in Clinicato: open it from "Medical tools" while you chart the visit, it fills in from the patient's details and vital signs where they are recorded, and adds its result to the visit's plan in one tap, with the "Medical tools" add-on. Try it in your clinic

Calculator

Medical note: The result supports a clinical decision, it does not replace the doctor's judgement or examining the patient, and is to be checked against your reference before any treatment decision.

How it works and when to use it

MAP ≈ diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) ÷ 3, since the heart spends about two thirds of the cycle in diastole.

The calculator flags a MAP under 65 mmHg, the initial target of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines in septic shock.

Reference: MAP ≈ DBP + (SBP − DBP) / 3; target 65 mmHg in septic shock: Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines 2021

Frequently asked questions

Why does MAP matter and not only systolic pressure?

It reflects the perfusion pressure that carries blood to organs such as the kidneys and brain over the whole cardiac cycle.

Is the formula accurate at fast heart rates?

It is an approximation, at very fast rates diastole shortens and it loses accuracy, and arterial lines measure it directly.
