Calculator
How it works and when to use it
WHO counts as healthy the weights that give a body mass index from 18.5 to 24.9, so the calculator multiplies these two numbers by your height in metres squared to give the lowest and highest healthy weight.
If you enter your current weight it also shows your BMI and its class, and how many kilograms separate you from the healthy range.
Reference: WHO Technical Report Series 894, Obesity: preventing and managing the global epidemic (2000): normal BMI 18.5-24.9 kg/m² (adults); weight = BMI × height (m)²
Frequently asked questions
Is there one ideal weight for each height?
No, each height has a range of healthy weights, and where you fit in it depends on build, muscle and age.
Do I have to reach the healthy range to benefit?
No, losing 5 to 10% of your weight clearly improves blood pressure, sugar and lipids even before the healthy range.
Can it be used for children?
No, a child's weight is read on growth charts by age and sex, and the paediatrician assesses it.
