For doctors and health professionals

A tool to support the clinical decisions of doctors and health professionals, not for self-diagnosis or self-treatment.

This calculator is inside the patient's file in Clinicato: open it from "Medical tools" while you chart the visit, it fills in from the patient's details and vital signs where they are recorded, and adds its result to the visit's plan in one tap, with the "Medical tools" add-on. Calculator

Medical note: The result supports a clinical decision, it does not replace the doctor's judgement or examining the patient, and is to be checked against your reference before any treatment decision.

How it works and when to use it

The American Society of Anesthesiologists' system (last amended 2020) classes a patient from ASA I (healthy) to ASA VI (brain-dead organ donor), adding E for an emergency operation.

The tool shows each class's definition and official examples, such as smoking, pregnancy and well-controlled diabetes in ASA II, and poorly controlled diabetes and morbid obesity in ASA III.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ASA class measure surgical risk?

No, it describes the patient's health only, and the risk of an operation also depends on its type, length and anaesthesia.

Who assigns the class?

Usually the anaesthetist at the pre-operative assessment, and doctors may differ on borderline cases.
